Overview

Tirthan Valley is an untouched, serene eco-tourism paradise located at an altitude ranging from 1,600 to 2,100 meters in Kullu District, named after the crystal-clear Tirthan River that originates from the icy glaciers of the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP). Free from commercial crowds, Tirthan Valley offers tranquil pine-forested glades, traditional wooden villages, rushing trout streams, and access to pristine Himalayan wilderness.

At the heart of the valley's eco-conservation lies the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP), recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 for its exceptional biodiversity. Spanning over 1,100 square kilometers, GHNP is home to rare and endangered alpine wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, blue sheep, musk deer, and the exotic Western Tragopan bird. Guided trekking expeditions into GHNP allow nature lovers to experience untouched virgin forests, wildflower alpine meadows, and glacier valleys.

Tirthan Valley is world-famous as a premier destination for brown and rainbow trout angling. The crystal-clear oxygenated waters of the Tirthan River provide an ideal habitat for trout, and visitors can obtain local fishing permits to enjoy catch-and-release fly fishing along peaceful riverbanks. Cozy stone-and-wood eco-lodges and homestays line the river, serving fresh farm-to-table Himachali meals.

Adventure opportunities abound throughout the valley. From the high mountain saddle of Jalori Pass (3,120 meters), travelers can embark on a popular 5 km forest trek through dense oak and rhododendron woods to reach Serolsar Lake, a tranquil body of water holding a small temple dedicated to Goddess Budhi Nagin. Another cultural landmark is Chehni Kothi, a 1,500-year-old multi-story wooden tower fort constructed using traditional Kath-Kuni masonry.

Tirthan Valley is best visited from March to June and September to November. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency organizes Tirthan eco-homestay packages, trout angling tours, Jalori Pass & Serolsar Lake treks, and GHNP guided trekking escorts with private taxi transfers from Chandigarh, Bhuntar Airport, and Shimla.
