Overview

Nestled gracefully at an elevation of 2,195 meters (7,200 feet) in the Ravi River valley of Chamba District, Bharmour—historically known as Brahmpura—is an ancient Himalayan sanctuary steeped in deep spiritual sanctity, royal history, and mountain culture. Served as the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Chamba for over 400 years from the 6th to 10th centuries AD under King Meru Varman and Raja Sahil Varman, Bharmour is universally revered as the earthly gateway to Mount Manimahesh Kailash (5,653m).

At the cultural and spiritual core of Bharmour lies the world-famous 1400-Year-Old Chaurasi Temple Complex. Housing 84 distinct holy shrines, the complex is dominated by the grand Manimahesh Shiva Temple built with stone spires, the ancient wooden Narsimha Temple, the copper-gilt Bull Nandi statue cast by master artisan Gugga in the 7th century, and the solemn Dharamraj Temple (Temple of the God of Justice). According to sacred tradition, every pilgrim undertaking the holy Mani Mahesh Yatra must seek blessings at Chaurasi Temple before ascending to the holy glacial lake.

Perched on a mountain ridge high above Bharmour town at 2,570 meters stands the revered Bharmani Mata Temple. Local legend dictates that before embarking on the Mani Mahesh trek, pilgrims must perform a holy dip in the sacred Bharmani Kund pool and offer prayers to Goddess Bharmani, who was granted divine eternal guardianship of the valley by Lord Shiva.

Bharmour is also the homeland of the native Gaddi tribe—a semi-nomadic pastoral community known for their rich folklore, distinctive traditional wooden attire (Chola and Dora), and deep knowledge of high-altitude Himalayan routes. The region serves as the base camp for high-mountain pass expeditions across the Pir Panjal range into Lahaul, Kangra, and Pangi via Kugti Pass (5,050m), Indrahar Pass (4,342m), and Minkiani Pass.

As the headquarters of Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency, our local team operates directly from Bharmour. We provide authentic local guide escorts, Mani Mahesh Yatra registration assistance, hotel and camping arrangements at Dhancho and Gauri Kund, and private mountain 4x4 transfers from Pathankot, Kangra, and Chamba.
