Overview

Spiti Valley—meaning 'The Middle Land' between India and Tibet—is a breathtaking trans-Himalayan high-altitude cold desert situated at an average elevation of 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) in Lahaul and Spiti District. Surrounded by soaring barren mountains, stark canyons, turquoise alpine rivers, and ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Spiti offers one of the most awe-inspiring and remote overland road trip adventures on planet Earth.

At the spiritual heart of Spiti stands the thousand-year-old Key Monastery (Ki Gompa), perched dramatically on a conical hilltop at an altitude of 4,166 meters overlooking the Spiti River. Resembling a fortress of whitewashed mud-brick structures stacked atop one another, Key Monastery is the largest training center for Lamas in Spiti, housing rare ancient thangka paintings, Buddhist manuscripts, and wind instruments. Other ancient monastic treasures include Tabo Monastery (established in 996 AD and called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' for its thousand-year-old frescoes) and Dhankar Monastery perched precariously on a cliff spire.

Spiti is home to extraordinary high-altitude settlements. Hikkim, located at 4,440 meters, features the World's Highest Post Office, where travelers post postcards to loved ones from the clouds. Nearby lies Komic (4,587m), one of the highest villages in the world connected by motorable road, and Langza (4,400m), famous for its giant golden Buddha statue facing the snow peaks and prehistoric marine fossils embedded in the soil.

Natural wonders abound in Spiti. Chandratal Lake ('The Moon Lake'), situated at 4,300 meters, is a crescent-shaped turquoise glacial body of water set amidst high mountain meadows. Crossing the formidable Kunzum Pass (4,551m) connects Spiti to Lahaul Valley, offering panoramic views of the Bara Shigri Glacier. Asia's highest suspension bridge, the Chicham Bridge (spanning a 150-meter deep gorge at 4,145m), links the remote villages of Chicham and Kibber.

Spiti Valley is best visited from June to October when mountain passes are free of heavy snow. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency organizes complete 4x4 Spiti Valley road trips, monastery tours, homestay accommodations, permit handling, and experienced mountain drivers from Shimla/Kinnaur or Manali routes.
