Overview
Founded in 920 AD by Raja Sahil Varman and named after his beloved daughter Champavati, Chamba Heritage Town is the ancient artistic and cultural capital of Chamba District, situated at an altitude of 1,006 meters (3,300 feet) on the banks of the roaring Ravi River. Surrounded by towering green hills, Chamba is celebrated worldwide for its 10th-century stone Nagara-style temple architecture, Pahari miniature paintings, UNESCO-recognized Chamba Rumal embroidery, and vibrant cultural festivals.
At the architectural center of the town stands the historic Laxmi Narayan Temple Complex, a group of six magnificent stone temples built between the 10th and 14th centuries. Featuring tall spires, stone carvings, and brass pinnacles, the complex contains shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, representing masterworks of medieval Himachali stone masonry. Nearby lies the Champavati Temple, featuring delicate stone reliefs, and the Akhand Chandi Palace, the former royal residence of the Varman dynasty overlooking the town.
Chamba is world-renowned for its artistic traditions preserved at the Bhuri Singh Museum, established in 1908. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of rare Basholi and Kangra Pahari miniature paintings, royal copper-plate inscriptions, ancient weapons, and intricate Chamba Rumal embroidery—double-sided needlework created using unspun silk threads that looks identical on both sides. The town is also famous for traditional Chamba chappals (embroidered leather footwear) and metallic handicrafts.
The town centers around the historic Chogan—a vast open green lawn that serves as the social hub of Chamba. Every monsoon season (July/August), the Chogan hosts the internationally famous Minjar Mela festival, celebrating agricultural prosperity and harvest with grand processions, folk music, and traditional rituals where silk Minjars (maize shoots) are offered into the Ravi River.
Chamba enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year and serves as the central transport junction connecting Dalhousie, Khajjiar, Bharmour, and Pangi Valley via Sach Pass. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency provides heritage walking tours of Chamba, hotel stays, and custom tour packages connecting Chamba with Bharmour and Mani Mahesh Yatra.
