Overview
Established in 1854 by the British Empire as a summer retreat and named after Lord Dalhousie, the Governor-General of India, Dalhousie is spread over five pine and oak-clad hills—Kathlog, Potreyn, Tehra, Bakrota, and Balun—at an altitude of 1,970 meters (6,460 feet) in Chamba District. Boasting magnificent vistas of the snow-capped Dhauladhar mountain range, Dalhousie retains a charming colonial ambiance characterized by Victorian stone churches, Scottish-style bungalows, quiet forest promenades, and crisp mountain air.
The town centers around two vibrant pedestrian hubs: Subhash Chowk and Gandhi Chowk. Visitors can stroll along the serene Bakrota Loop, a 5 km level forest walk offering 360-degree panoramic views of snow-draped Himalayan ranges and deep pine valleys. Key colonial landmarks include St. John's Church at Gandhi Chowk (built in 1863) and St. Francis Church at Subhash Chowk (built in 1894), featuring exquisite stained glass windows, carved wooden ceilings, and historic stone masonry.
Nature lovers and adventure seekers will find rich exploration opportunities around Dalhousie. Panchpula, located 3 km from town, is a picturesque spot where mountain streams meet, featuring a monument dedicated to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh. A short drive away lies Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, a dense deodar and oak forest reserve housing black bears, leopards, barking deer, and exotic Himalayan birds, crisscrossed by peaceful nature walks and forest rest houses.
Dalhousie also serves as the gateway to the sacred Chamba Valley and the emerald meadow of Khajjiar. Visitors can hike up to Dainkund Peak (2,755 meters)—the highest point in Dalhousie—often called the 'Singing Hill' due to the wind whistling through the trees, housing the hilltop Pholani Devi Temple with sweeping views of the Beas, Ravi, and Chenab rivers.
With mild pleasant summers (April to June) and snow-covered winters (December to February), Dalhousie is a year-round mountain haven. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency provides customized Dalhousie packages featuring pickup from Pathankot Railway Station, luxury hotel arrangements, day excursions to Khajjiar and Chamba, and private mountain transport.
