Overview

Kangra is an ancient, historically rich city in Northern Himachal Pradesh mentioned in the Mahabharata as Trigarta. Nestled in the fertile Kangra Valley at an elevation of 733 meters (2,405 feet) against the soaring backdrop of the Dhauladhar range, Kangra is world-famous for the formidable 3,500-year-old Kangra Fort, revered Shakti Peeth temples, 8th-century rock-cut architecture, and fine Kangra miniature paintings.

Perched dramatically on a steep cliff at the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers stands the historic Kangra Fort (Nagarkot), built by the Katoch Rajput dynasty. Recognized as the oldest cataloged fort in India and the largest in the Himalayas, Kangra Fort survived centuries of sieges by Mahmud of Ghazni, Jahangir, and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Visitors can walk through its seven massive arched gateways, explore ancient stone temples dedicated to Ambika Devi and Laxmi Narayan, and enjoy panoramic views of the valley.

Kangra is a major pilgrimage center housing the sacred Mata Brajeshwari Devi Shakti Peeth temple, where according to Hindu mythology, the left breast of Goddess Sati fell. Rebuilt after the 1905 earthquake, the temple draws lakhs of pilgrims during Navratri festivals to seek divine blessings. Just 22 km from Kangra lie the 8th-century Masroor Rock-Cut Temples—a complex of 15 monolithic rock shrines carved directly out of a single sandstone ridge, often hailed as the 'Ellora of the North.'

Other notable spiritual landmarks include the Jwala Ji Shakti Peeth (where eternal natural gas flames burn continuously without fuel) and Chamunda Devi Temple set on the banks of the Baner river. The region is also famous for the historic Kangra Valley Narrow-Gauge Railway, built in 1928, offering scenic train journeys through tea gardens and over mountain bridges.

Kangra enjoys pleasant weather from October to April, making it ideal for pilgrimage tours, historical exploration, and photography. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency offers complete Kangra Valley tour packages, including private pickups from Gaggal/Kangra Airport, Pathankot, and Chandigarh, hotel bookings, and spiritual circuit tours covering Brajeshwari Devi, Jwala Ji, Chamunda Devi, and Kangra Fort.
