Overview

Stretching across the high mountain passes beyond the Pir Panjal range in northern Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul Valley is a pristine trans-Himalayan high-altitude region situated at an average elevation of 3,080 meters (10,100 feet). Long isolated during winter months, Lahaul is now accessible year-round following the opening of the historic 9.02 km Atal Tunnel under Rohtang Pass, opening up a world of snow-capped mountains, cascading waterfalls, turquoise rivers, and ancient Buddhist gompas.

Upon emerging from the North Portal of the Atal Tunnel, visitors are greeted by the picturesque village of Sissu along the Chandra River. Sissu is famous for its magnificent cascading Sissu Waterfall (Palden Lhamo dhar), green alpine poplars, and snow-capped ridge views. Further down the valley lies Keylong, the administrative headquarters of Lahaul, surrounded by barley fields and perched above the Bhaga River.

Lahaul possesses a deep spiritual heritage. Perched on a hill across from Keylong stands Kardang Monastery, a 12th-century Drukpa Kagyu gompa housing ancient Buddhist scriptures, thangkas, and colorful murals. Other notable monasteries include Tayul Gompa (famous for its 12-foot statue of Guru Rinpoche) and Shashur Monastery. In the sacred Pattab valley lie the holy Trilokinath Temple (revered equally by Hindus as Lord Shiva and Buddhists as Avalokiteshvara) and Mrikula Devi Temple in Udaipur, famous for its exquisite 11th-century deodar wood carvings.

Lahaul is a major gateway for high-altitude road expeditions leading to Leh-Ladakh and Zanskar. Along the Manali-Leh Highway lie Jispa—a popular riverside camping haven along the Bhaga River—and Darcha, the starting point for wilderness treks across Shinku La pass. Higher up lies the formidable Baralacha La Pass (4,890m) and the pristine turquoise Suraj Tal Lake ('Lake of the Sun God'), the source of the Bhaga River.

Lahaul Valley offers spectacular beauty in every season: lush green crop fields in summer, golden foliage in autumn, and snow-draped landscapes in winter. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency provides Lahaul Valley tour packages, 4x4 Atal Tunnel day trips, Jispa riverside camping, and overland Leh-Ladakh transfers with experienced mountain drivers.
