Overview
Universally recognized as the 'Mini Switzerland of India,' Khajjiar features a breathtaking saucer-shaped emerald meadow situated at an altitude of 1,920 meters (6,300 ft) in Chamba District, framed by soaring deodar pine forests and snow-covered Himalayan peaks. On July 7, 1992, Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India, officially designated Khajjiar as one of the 160 locations worldwide that bear striking topographical resemblance to Switzerland, installing a signpost indicating the distance of 6,194 km to Bern.
At the center of the vast green expanse lies Khajjiar Lake, a serene natural water body surrounded by lush turf where visitors can enjoy horse riding, nature walks, and zorbing. At the edge of the meadow stands the 12th-century Khajji Nag Temple, an ancient wooden shrine dedicated to serpent worship (Nag Devta). The temple features magnificent wood carvings depicting scenes from the Mahabharata, intricate pillar carvings, and images of the Pandavas.
Khajjiar is surrounded by the dense Kalatop-Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary, offering enchanting forest trekking trails through thick deodar canopy. Trekkers can explore trails connecting Khajjiar to Dainkund Peak and Kalatop, encountering diverse flora, alpine bird species, and serene mountain vistas along the way. The town offers a tranquil retreat away from urban crowds, where travelers can breathe fresh mountain air and absorb the serene natural beauty.
Khajjiar experiences pleasant weather during spring and summer (April to June), making it ideal for family picnics and outdoor recreation. Monsoon covers the meadow in rich emerald greens, while winter (December to March) covers the plateau in thick white snow, transforming it into a winter wonderland for snow lovers.
Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency organizes day tours and overnight stays in Khajjiar, combining it with Dalhousie, Chamba, and Bharmour itineraries, complete with private taxi transport from Pathankot, Gaggal Airport, or Amritsar.
