Overview

Situated at an altitude of 2,708 meters (8,884 feet) along the National Highway 05 (Hindustan-Tibet Road) just 60 km beyond Shimla, Narkanda is a tranquil mountain resort town nestled amid sprawling apple orchards, dense spruce and fir forests, and high mountain ridges. Offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the inner snow-capped Himalayan ranges, Narkanda is celebrated as one of India's oldest winter ski destinations and a serene year-round mountain retreat.

The crowning glory of Narkanda is Hatu Peak, the highest summit in the region at an altitude of 3,400 meters (11,155 feet). Reachable via a 6 km scenic drive or a rewarding forest trek through thick oak, pine, and deodar woods, Hatu Peak commands sweeping, unobstructed views of the Greater Himalayas, including peaks in Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Uttarakhand. At the summit stands the magnificent wooden Hatu Mata Temple, an architectural marvel built in traditional Himachali Kath-Kuni style with intricate wood carvings dedicated to Goddess Kali.

Narkanda plays a pivotal role in Himachal's apple heritage. Just a short drive away lies Kotgarh and Thanedar, the historic cradle of Himachali apple cultivation where American missionary Samuel Evans Stokes (Satyanand Stokes) planted the first delicious American apple saplings in 1916. During spring (April), the valleys are covered in white apple blossoms, while autumn (August to October) sees orchards heavy with red apples.

During winter months (December to February), Narkanda transforms into a snow lover's paradise. The gentle slopes of Dhumri near Narkanda host beginner and intermediate ski courses organized by the Himachal Tourism and Mountaineering Institute, complete with equipment rentals and ski instructors.

Narkanda offers pleasant, cool weather in summer and snow in winter. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency provides Narkanda holiday packages, Hatu Peak guided day treks, Kotgarh apple orchard tours, winter skiing packages, and private taxi transfers from Shimla, Kalka, and Chandigarh.
