Palampur

Overview

Known as the 'Tea Capital of Northwest India,' Palampur is a serene hill station situated at an altitude of 1,220 meters (4,000 feet) in the Kangra Valley, cradled beneath the snow-covered peaks of the Dhauladhar mountain range. The town derives its name from 'Pulum' (meaning abundant water), referring to the innumerable crystal-clear mountain streams that flow down from the snows to irrigate lush tea plantations, pine forests, and paddy fields.

Palampur was established as a major center for tea cultivation in the mid-19th century by Dr. Jameson, Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens. Today, sprawling green tea gardens blanket the landscape, where visitors can enjoy guided plantation walks, observe traditional orthodox tea picking, and visit the Palampur Cooperative Tea Factory to sample and purchase aromatic Kangra tea. The cool climate, frequent mountain breezes, and fertile soil produce teas renowned for their unique flavor and high antioxidant content.

Nature and art blend seamlessly in Palampur. Neugal Khad, located 2 km from town, is a wide mountain chasm through which the rushing Neugal stream flows, spanned by an iron suspension bridge and surrounded by popular picnic spots and cafes with views of the snow peaks. Nearby lies Saurabh Van Vihar, a beautifully landscaped eco-park built along the stream featuring nature trails, boating, and lush green lawns dedicated to brave army officer Captain Saurabh Kalia.

Just 13 km from Palampur lies the famous Andretta Artists' Village, founded in the 1920s by Irish playwright Norah Richards and legendary painter Sobha Singh. Visitors can tour the Sobha Singh Art Gallery displaying masterpiece paintings of Punjabi folklore and Sikh Gurus, and visit the Andretta Pottery Studio to watch master potters at work or try their hand at clay pottery wheel crafting.
