Overview
Located in eastern Himachal Pradesh bordering Tibet, Kinnaur Valley is a land of mythic mountain beauty, high passes, deep river gorges, and rich Indo-Tibetan cultural heritage. Situated along the Sutlej and Baspa rivers at an elevation ranging from 2,300 meters to over 4,000 meters, Kinnaur is famously celebrated in Hindu mythology as the realm of the 'Kinnauras'—divine celestial musicians. It is world-renowned for its crisp apples, golden sunrise vistas, and the sacred Kinnaur Kailash peak (6,050m).
At the scenic center of Kinnaur lies Kalpa, a picturesque village perched at 2,960 meters directly opposite the majestic Kinnaur Kailash mountain range. From Kalpa's apple orchards and traditional Kath-Kuni wooden homes, travelers witness awe-inspiring views of the 79-foot natural rock Shivalinga monolith atop Kinnaur Kailash, which changes color throughout the day as sunlight shifts across the snow. Kalpa is also famous for the dramatic 'Suicide Point' cliff overlook offering sheer vertical views down into the Sutlej river gorge.
Branching off from Karcham lies the enchanting Sangla Valley, carved by the roaring blue waters of the Baspa River. Surrounded by forested mountain slopes and apple orchards, Sangla features the ancient Kamru Fort, a multi-tiered wooden tower fort that served as the original seat of the Kinnaur rulers, housing a temple dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. At the far end of the valley lies Chitkul (3,450 meters)—celebrated as the 'Last Indian Village' on the Indo-Tibet border, famous for its wooden houses, pristine Baspa riverbanks, and potato farms.
Further up the valley towards Spiti lies Nako Village (3,662m), built around the peaceful Nako Lake and housing the 11th-century Nako Monastery established by Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. Kinnauri culture represents a harmonious blend of Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism, reflected in local attire, traditional Kinnauri caps, and wooden temple architecture.
Kinnaur is best explored from April to October.
