Overview

Situated strategically along the banks of the Beas River at an altitude of 760 meters (2,493 feet), Mandi is an ancient commercial and cultural hub famously celebrated as 'Chhoti Kashi' or the 'Varanasi of the Hills.' Home to 81 historic stone Shiva temples adorned with intricate Nagara carvings, Mandi served as the capital of the princely State of Mandi and acts as the central gateway to the valleys of Kullu, Manali, Lahaul, Spiti, and Kangra.

At the spiritual core of Mandi stands the historic Bhootnath Temple, built in 1527 AD by Raja Ajbar Sen, dedicated to Lord Shiva. On the banks of the Beas River lies the awe-inspiring 14th-century Panchvaktra Temple, a stone Nagara masterpiece housing a unique five-faced monolithic statue of Lord Shiva representing his creator, preserver, and destroyer aspects. Other notable stone temples include the Triloknath Temple (1520 AD), Ardhnareshwar Temple, and the historic Sunken Garden plaza in the town center.

Mandi is the gateway to extraordinary natural and spiritual landmarks. Located 49 km from town at an altitude of 2,730 meters lies the mystical Prashar Lake, featuring a natural floating island that continuously moves across deep blue waters. Overlooking the lake stands a magnificent 3-tiered wooden pagoda temple built in 1383 AD by Raja Bansen, dedicated to the sage Prashar Rishi. Nearby lies Rewalsar Lake (Tso Pema), a sacred tri-religious pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs featuring a 123-foot colossal statue of Guru Padmasambhava overlooking the water.

Every spring (February/March), Mandi hosts the world-famous International Mandi Shivratri Fair. Over 200 colorful village deities carried in traditional palanquins assemble at the Paddal Ground for a week-long festival of music, dance, and cultural processions.

Mandi enjoys pleasant weather throughout autumn, winter, and spring. Shiv Bhumi Travel Agency provides Mandi heritage tours, Prashar Lake trekking camping packages, Rewalsar day trips, and private vehicle transport connecting Mandi to Kullu, Manali, Shimla, and Pathankot.
